Northern Lights spotted near Forest of DeanPosted on 03rd March 2014
The stunning Northern Lights – otherwise known as aurora borealis – were seen over Gloucestershire and the Forest of Dean last week.
Locals and people staying in new holiday cottages in the Forest of Dean were treated to a green glow in the sky as the Northern Lights arrived in the UK.
Onlookers were amazed to see the spectacular event, which is normally only witnessed in Scandinavian countries.
Forest of Dean photographer William Henderson said, “Well tonight turned into something truly amazing. What was meant to be a simple night time shoot of the stars turned into something which I can only describe as awesome!”
The beautiful aurora borealis was also seen in several other parts of the UK, including Essex, Norfolk, South Wales, the north of Scotland and even as far down as Jersey.
The spectacular event occurs when electrically charged particles from the Sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere.
